1. Scientific cooperation projects and regional excellence clusters
Through its support for inter-university scientific cooperation projects (ISCPs) and regional excellence clusters (RECs), the AUF aims to encourage Southern teams to carry out scientific research having an impact on development. In 2007, the AUF supported 75 ISCPs. Led by at least three universities from different countries, these projects are eligible for grants of up to 20 000 Euros over a two-year period. Grants awarded to RECs may reach 100 000 Euros, over three years. Since this focus area was instituted, the AUF has supported 25 excellence clusters in Southern nations, including 10 new clusters selected in 2007.
2. International academic conferences
Each year, the AUF supports international conferences held partially or entirely in French, with priority given to those held in Southern nations. In 2007, over 100 events were funded through this measure.
3. Numerous grants, for all academic groups
In academic year 2006-2007, nearly 1 350 grants were awarded to students, teachers and researchers to facilitate international mobility, a priority measure of the AUF, which is aimed at strengthening ties and solidarity between higher education and research establishments.
4. Open and distance learning
In academic year 2006-2007, over 750 students, 80% of from Sub-Saharan Africa, were selected to be enrolled in on-line courses which allow them to earn a degree from an AUF member establishment, whether it be in the North or the South.
5. University training programmes
The training of human resources, a major priority of the AUF, constitutes a key factor in the development of Southern nations. The Agency supports nearly 100 academic excellence training programmes, recognized by one or more universities and serving nearly 10 000 students.
6. Research networks
The networking of the academic community constitutes a priority for the AUF which supports 20 research networks, in a large variety of disciplines. Through this effort, it offers financial assistance for the publication of articles and the organisation of scientific gatherings.
7. Digital campuses
More than 15 000 teachers, researchers and students are involved in one of the 42 francophone digital campuses established within the academic arena. There they find digital scientific documentation and can enrol in numerous information and communication technologies programmes.
